Just Another Apple Xserve Related Rant

So now my hackles are officially raised.

Try this:

Go to Apple’s online store.

Nice, isn’t it? Fits very nicely with their recent online redesign. It’s clean. It even has lovely web standards and is (X)HTML and CSS based and is very clean. Nothing wrong with the design.

What’s missing?

Let’s see…

I see iPod stuff. I see iPhone stuff. Heck, I even see stuff about Macintosh computers! They still sell those?!

But wait!

Doesn’t Apple also sell something else?

Like, maybe a delightfully slick and wonderful SERVER product?

Whither the Xserve, Apple, Inc.?

Now, I understand that someone who hits the Apple Store and begins browsing around isn’t just going to say, “Ooh, look! Not only do I want to buy a new iPod touch, but I’m going to pick up a fully loaded $3,000 dollar 1U server!” Right, that’s probably not how that works.

But, as far as I can tell, you CAN NOT find and configure an Xserve by merely browsing the online store. Even in the “business store” section, it is not featured or shown. Search is the only way to find one. Same goes for the Xserve RAID.

Look, I understand that all the money right now is in iPods, iPhones, and laptops. I totally get that. But, look, I DEPEND on Xserves to do my job. I have TBs of “stuff” here in the studio stored on Xserves. (And you are being served amiably by an Xserve right now.)

Can someone at Apple please give at least a LITTLE love to the “Enterprise” customers? All twelve of us?

Come on! Isn’t the Xserve a MUCH more important product than that new super thin wireless keyboard? Can we just get a link or teeny, wee pic? Can it not be a “staff pick” at the very least?

Or perhaps Apple, Inc. is just trying to subtly tell us that they have completely given up on that market and will now ONLY be making iPods, iPhones and maybe the occasional Mac.

Say it ain’t so!

So my hackles can calm down and get some rest. It takes a lot of energy to raise them like that. I’m exhausted!

Although not nearly so tired as last time I weighed in. That one was a doozy.

Holy Crap! Look at all this STUFF down here. It's awesome!

Really, I'm glad you made it down here. Almost no one ever comes down here. I'm like in a freaking dungeon down here. I get lonely. But not you. YOU made it all the way to the end of the page. For this I think I've a little crush on you. I don't know, is "love" to strong a word to use in this situation? Well, if it's not "love," then it's very strong "like." I'm totally in like with you for coming down here. You are awesome. Please love me back! I know, I know, I shouldn't be all needy, it's not attractive at all, but you don't know how it is to be stuck down here. Who scrolls all the way to the end of a page anymore these days? Anyway, thanks for shedding some light down here in the depths. I appreciate it. Shoot me an email and I'll send you a dollar, OK?
