Photoshop Hates Me After Re-install
So let’s say you decided to re-install your System on your shiny and eminently lickable Mac. You want to keep all your data so you do an “Archive and Install” instead of wiping the beast’s hard drive clean. Everything is fine except one little thing:
When you double click on a Photoshop file the file doesn’t open. The Mac opens or activates Photoshop just fine, but the file never opens. It just sits there, not unlike my toddler when I tell her to put on her socks in the morning. You also can’t select a photo in InDesign or Illustrator, hit the “Edit Original” button in the Links palette and have that image open in Photoshop. It’s broken! The only hope is to re-install Photoshop or Creative Suite entirely, which is annoying to say the least.
Here’s the culprit:
There is a teen-tiny file, squirreled away in the “/Library” directory. It’s called “Adobe Type Units” and it lives in a folder called “ScriptingAddtions” If you have done a re-install, you’ll find the file/folder buried in the “Previous System” folder that the OS X installer made. (This is the “archive” of “Archive and Install” fame). If you just want to download a working copy of this, well, then I’d click here, if I were you. Un-zip that bad boy and plop it into the “Library” folder. Quit and re-start all Adobe apps. You do not need to re-boot the machine unless you are truly paranoid. Double-click on a PSD (or whatever) and it’ll open in Photoshop. Magic!
This screen shot may be of some use to you as well. This is where the file is located. My HD is called “Uno” in this instance. Notice that this is NOT the “Library” folder that lives inside your “User” folder. That’s a completely different animal. Put the “ScriptingAdditions” folder in the “Library” folder which is at the root level of your system hard drive.
Please note that I have thus far refrained from RANTING about the mystical reasons behind why Photoshop requires a file in order to complete a command such a double-clicking. I mean, that’s only been a part of the Mac OS since… I don’t know… 1984 or so? OK, so that was a mini-rant. Sorry. And minions from Adobe, go ahead and e-mail telling me to take down your proprietary “Adobe Type Units” file. Operators are standing by here at Ransom Note HQ.
Holy Crap! Look at all this STUFF down here. It's awesome!

Really, I'm glad you made it down here. Almost no one ever comes down here. I'm like in a freaking dungeon down here. I get lonely. But not you. YOU made it all the way to the end of the page. For this I think I've a little crush on you. I don't know, is "love" to strong a word to use in this situation? Well, if it's not "love," then it's very strong "like." I'm totally in like with you for coming down here. You are awesome. Please love me back! I know, I know, I shouldn't be all needy, it's not attractive at all, but you don't know how it is to be stuck down here. Who scrolls all the way to the end of a page anymore these days? Anyway, thanks for shedding some light down here in the depths. I appreciate it. Shoot me an email and I'll send you a dollar, OK?
