Not Purposefully Obscure

I was noodling around on the iTunes Music Store and discovered to my delight that Francesco Guccini is now available there.

Who is Francesco Guccini, you might be asking?

He’s only the best thing Italy ever produced since they stole spaghetti from the Chinese.

Anyway, he kind of straddles genres. Sometimes folk-y and sometimes pop. But always really, really good. I don’t recommend him to you unless you speak Italian, of course. And I’m not being snobby or anything here, I’m just saying. The music is good, but not good enough to overcome not understanding what he’s saying.

My favorite song (almost of all time, even more than “YYZ” or anything from the Led Zeppelin catalog) is “Autogrill” which sadly is not there.

But you can get ”Dio é Morto” (God is Dead) which is nice.

My point in telling you about this totally obscure (here in America and to a certain degree even in Italy) singer/songwriter is how I “discovered” him. I was browsing a record store in Bari, Italy one Monday a million years ago and picked it completely at random. I went in saying to myself, “I’m going to buy something, something by someone with a few albums to his/her name, and it’ll the first thing I grab” and listen straight through and see if I liked it. I snatched “Quasi come Dumas” and then had to go back and get more by him later that week.

Quite the experiment for me at the time, since I really didn’t have that much time or money to waste on such frivolities as new music.

Anyway, I know nobody really cares about Francesco Guccini or my taste in music, but I did want to say that every now and then it’s a really good idea just to randomly jump off a bridge (speaking metaphorically, of course) and do something unexpected.

Holy Crap! Look at all this STUFF down here. It's awesome!

Really, I'm glad you made it down here. Almost no one ever comes down here. I'm like in a freaking dungeon down here. I get lonely. But not you. YOU made it all the way to the end of the page. For this I think I've a little crush on you. I don't know, is "love" to strong a word to use in this situation? Well, if it's not "love," then it's very strong "like." I'm totally in like with you for coming down here. You are awesome. Please love me back! I know, I know, I shouldn't be all needy, it's not attractive at all, but you don't know how it is to be stuck down here. Who scrolls all the way to the end of a page anymore these days? Anyway, thanks for shedding some light down here in the depths. I appreciate it. Shoot me an email and I'll send you a dollar, OK?
