Happy Obama Day! Free Puppies for Everyone!

I love this map:

(screen grab from msnbc)

I have many thoughts. But I’m struck by a couple things.

Seriously.

Think about this for a second. A couple hundred years ago, African-American men and women were brought to this country in chains.

Fifty or so years ago, they could barely vote.

Yesterday we elected a black man as President (mixed race, even!) (and he has a simply terrible middle name!)

THAT is a helluva thing. (Mostly because his race didn’t seem to matter to most people voting for him)

Finally, go read/watch the speeches the candidates gave last night. McCain was gracious, genial and a gentleman. Finally. (Though if you watch the video, you’ll note that his supporters in the audience are decidedly NOT any of those things). I tend to think the McCain from last night is the “real” McCain. Why he didn’t talk like that during the actual campaign is a ginourmous mystery. Obama’s speech made me weep. Of course. With gladness and joy and determination.

Welcome to the future, America.

  1. Yes, I completely agree.  Had McCain shown his true personality and picked a better VP, I think he would have taken this race by storm.  He did have a lot of things going against him, and you have to figure with all the baggage he was carrying and he STILL got 46% of the vote, thats HUGE.

I’m a big Obama supporter and while I was excited to see the results, I had to blog about my mixed feelings I have the next day.

  2. I’m one of those from the other Mavericky side but I really like what you said about having elected an African-American President… that is amazing and I hope that our children will be the generation where the color of one’s skin doesn’t matter at all…

  3. My niece and nephew will not remember a time when an African American hadn’t ever been president.  The newest one, arriving in April will not have lived in such a time.  Even more than a big Democrat win, that makes me so very happy.

  4. I was impressed with McCain’s speech, too. This is the man he should have been throughout his campaign.

  5. I thought the same thing about McCain.  Where was THAT guy during the debates?  I would have listened to him!

PS Why is your special word for verifying my comment so dirty—did you choose it?!

  6. I’m with everybody on the McCain comments.

Our president-elect doesn’t have real vote getter first or last names either.

Listing to a call in show on one of the Seattle area public radio stations a caller remarked “President Bush asked us to be consumers, Barak Obama asked us to be citizens.” I think there is a hunger for us to be be more more than just consumers; the caller nailed it when he said we wanted to be citizens.  I might have leaked a tear or two when I heard his comment.

  7. Amen brother, I’m Canadian and even I’m proud of the history that was made in the States.

Now, how do I get my free puppy?

Holy Crap! Look at all this STUFF down here. It's awesome!

Really, I'm glad you made it down here. Almost no one ever comes down here. I'm like in a freaking dungeon down here. I get lonely. But not you. YOU made it all the way to the end of the page. For this I think I've a little crush on you. I don't know, is "love" to strong a word to use in this situation? Well, if it's not "love," then it's very strong "like." I'm totally in like with you for coming down here. You are awesome. Please love me back! I know, I know, I shouldn't be all needy, it's not attractive at all, but you don't know how it is to be stuck down here. Who scrolls all the way to the end of a page anymore these days? Anyway, thanks for shedding some light down here in the depths. I appreciate it. Shoot me an email and I'll send you a dollar, OK?
