Fear My Tears

Carrie from Jon Deal on Vimeo.

Our oldest daughter left for college. I gathered a bunch of old photos of her and strung them together.

She’s awesome.

It’s crazy how time flies. I swear, it feels like she was born about twenty minutes ago.

And yes, I did weep a lot while making this.

And if you dare make fun of my hair as seen here (or the popped collar at around the 3:00 mark), I will hunt you down and do bad things to you. Or, I’ll just find bad pics of you from your past and post them on the IntarWebs. Don’t push me, pal, I’m a man on the edge right now.

  1. That is very special.  She will be fine.  But will you?

  2. That was beautiful. The Smiths are never inappropriate. I held up pretty good until about 2 1/2 minutes in, then there was weeping. They grow up SO fast it terrifies me.

  3. Aw, Jon, that is a really sweet montage. I’m sorry that you’re missing Carrie. What a smart, fun, totally awesome daughter you have!

The picture of her in the pot on the stove? MY FAVORITE.

And I didn’t make fun of your hair but I may have giggled a little at how young you and the mrs were when Carrie was born. Because man, you look like you were just barely old enough to pass the sacrament.

  4. WAAAAHHHH

I can barely cope with my kid entering high school in 5 days.

    WAAAAHHHH.

Also, you’re lucky to have each other.

  5. Having read your blog for a bit, I’d say Girl Friend In A Coma fits really well.

  6. I don’t even know you people, and I’m doing The Weeping. Thanks, man. Just thanks.

Mine kids are 10 and 11, and I know it’s a matter of minutes before I’ll be doing a montage. Minutes.

    Scares my pants off.

  7. I cannot imagine. My kids are small but I know they will grow way too fast…

  8. Yes.  I really think she’ll pull through…

You cannot deny this child - she resembles you.

    You’ll pull through too.

    Sniff.

  9. So sweet.  What a nice papa you are.

I remember that cute baby and I babysat Carrie once or twice in that apartment on 4th or 5th North—just behind the Bombay House, I think.  It was just a few months ago, right?  How can she be going to college already?

Looks to me like you have done a fabulous job as parents.

  10. Judging by her Halloween costumes alone, I think it’s safe to say that Carrie Will Do Well. And the video? Perfection.

  11. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say Carrie might be a tad bit embarrassed by this video…

But she shouldn’t be.  She should feel lucky to have such a proud and doting father.

And if she ever needs a place to crash in Portland… we have a bed waiting for her.

She’ll be fine, though.  Just fine.

  12. Lovely. Straight after watching I did the following:

    1. Went to daughters school, went straight into class and hugged my nine year old. She say’s she doesn’t want me to drop her anymore. Anywhere. Says she’s “Fine with buses.”

    2. Went to six years old’s class, she’d already heard about 1. so jumped out the window as soon as she saw me.

    3. Went to school office and mooned the principal.

... Don’t feel guilty about 3. You have no blame there.

  13. Bishop Deal, you’re by far the best dad.  I’m slightly jealous.  There was no video when I left home, only cheers from my father.  Carrie is lucky to have you.

  14. It’s good to see you love your kids so much. I won’t go into my own horrible experiences going off to college (both times). But, I’m pretty sure my dad did a happy dance when I left (he had 4 kids, I was # 3, think he was happy to get rid of us).

I only have 2 cats and happy they won’t incur college expenses.

Oh, you’re much taller in real life than I imagined. Fuller, too.

  15. Thanks to all!

Carrie had seen all the photos I’d chosen before she left. She was delighted for a while, thinking I’d deleted the “booty” shot, but now we see that college kids can be fooled quite easily. You just re-arrange things.

Anyway, she’s off on her adventure and eventually I’ll get used to her being gone.

    *big emo sigh*

  16. You got me. I’m bawling like a big fat baby.

  17. I can’t imagine what you are going through, she will be just fine. I also got to go to Japan when I was in H.S. it was a great experience.
I think I’ll make a video of my kids when they start kindergarten. I sometimes wish they will stay little forever, because time just go so fast.

  18. You have nothing to worry about… she was a Girl Scout!

Well, on second thought, maybe you *should* worry about when she finds out you left the bum picture in…

    Good luck with that…

  19. Awww, snif!

I can’t mock popped collars, guilty as charged.  See also:  pegged pants.

  20. I have missed RNT very much; it’s nice to be back!  The video is lovely, Jon.  What a sweet thing to have done.  My favorite shots are the couch naps.

Hang in there!  I cringe at the thought that I’ll be experiencing the same thing in three short years.

  21. You.  Are a fabulous dad.

With an equally awesome daughter.  She is a very, VERY lucky girl, to have such fantastic, loving parents.  Make sure and share updates from Wilamette.

  22. College?  I’m having enough trouble with *Kindergarten*.  Yowza.

  23. well I am sure after watching this that your daughter went off to college knowing that at home she has a family that loves her very much.  =) thats all she will need to keep her going on the right path!!

  24. This montage *almost* makes me wish I had a kid.

If only so that I had one of those kitty-as-a-head-cushion shots. Delicious!

Holy Crap! Look at all this STUFF down here. It's awesome!

Really, I'm glad you made it down here. Almost no one ever comes down here. I'm like in a freaking dungeon down here. I get lonely. But not you. YOU made it all the way to the end of the page. For this I think I've a little crush on you. I don't know, is "love" to strong a word to use in this situation? Well, if it's not "love," then it's very strong "like." I'm totally in like with you for coming down here. You are awesome. Please love me back! I know, I know, I shouldn't be all needy, it's not attractive at all, but you don't know how it is to be stuck down here. Who scrolls all the way to the end of a page anymore these days? Anyway, thanks for shedding some light down here in the depths. I appreciate it. Shoot me an email and I'll send you a dollar, OK?
